Emily West Village
On this Foodie Friday, I'd like to give a brief recommendation for Emily West Village—or any Emily location, really, but this is the only one I've had the chance to visit thus far.
Emily is primarily a pizza joint, but it is also known for its signature burger Emmy burger: apparently, Emily's husband (the chef) got sick of eating pizza, so he put a burger on the menu, and it became a hit.
Most of our group had not been to an Emily before, so of course we had to try both burgers and pizza. A well-balanced meal is important, no?
The Emmy burger at the West Village location contains LaFrieda dry-aged beef, EMMY sauce,
caramelized onion, American cheese, and pickles on a Tom Cat Pretzel bun, and it is served with curly fries. Each location's burger is a little different.
The pizza was great: we split a Quattro (bacon, pickled chili, ranch) and an Emily (pistachio, honey, truffle Sottocenere). These are both square pies with amazing flavor and lovely texture. The crust is nice and caramelized, not too thick or thin.
As good as the pizza was, the Emmy burger was definitely the star. It is easily one of the best burgers I've had (I hesitate to say "the" best because I've had a lot of awesome burgers). The meat is buttery, the cheese is delightful melty, the bun is soft and tasty, and the condiments give a nice kick to this melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece.
Definitely make a reservation if you want to check this place out. We were not aware that they were taking reservations, but the hostess was kind enough to find us a great table that evening.
I'm excited to try out the original Emily Brooklyn and Emmy Squared now. I hope you are, too!
